(Alliance News) - Engineering firm Smiths Group PLC has expanded its manufacturing of US chip test products in the face of possible tariffs, the Financial Times reported on Sunday.

Chief Executive Roland Carter told the FT that Smiths has been manufacturing of semiconductor sockets from Suzhou in China, to Texas. The items trial chip products.

The FT reported that Smiths said the US shift was prompted by rising trade curbs, which began during Donald Trump's first spell in the White House.

Concerns over more tariffs has meant the shift is "even more important", Smiths said, according to the FT.

"That will put us in a good position to serve US customers and not attract the tariffs that are being added for China," the FT reported Carter as saying.

The Trump administration in the US is set to update on tariffs next week. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said there will be "big announcements when it comes to reciprocal trade" on April 2.

In January, Smiths said it plans to sell its electronic connectors business by the end of 2025 and separate is threat detection arm, either by UK demerger or sale. It said this was to "unlock significant value and enhance returns to shareholders".
