(Alliance News) - Mining company Rio Tinto PLC confirmed on Monday the death of an employee of a contracting company working on the Simandou mining project in Morebaya, Guinea.

The employee died following an incident at Rio Tinto's SimFer port site on Saturday.

"Our deepest condolences go to the family, friends, colleagues and communities affected by this tragedy," said the company's Chief Executive Jakob Stausholm.

The company said activity at the SimFer port site has been suspended and it is working with its partners and relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation.

It added that it will continue to take all necessary steps to achieve the highest standards of health and safety at its sites.

Rio Tinto shares were 0.8% higher at 5,064.00 pence each on Monday afternoon in London.
