In January, Morningstar fund analysts launched the Morningstar Analyst Ratings for Closed-end Funds. In the first six months of this year, we have rated 52 funds, but we’re not stopping there. Watch out for some of the rating reports that are in the pipeline, which will be released in the coming weeks. These include Edinburgh Investment Trust (EDIN), Finsbury Growth and Income (FGT), Edinburgh Dragon (EFM) and JPMorgan Claverhouse (JCH), to name but a few.
Just nine funds carry our Gold rating so far and on six we're Neutral—this rating is where we lack conviction in out- or under-performance over the long term. The reasons vary and are made clear in each report.
We've chosen funds for inclusion in our Ratings Service primarily according to their size and liquidity, but also where we are receiving the portfolio information we require and in the right format. You can read more about this in our report entitled Why Transparency Matters.
We want our coverage to be helpful to you, the investor. So please do take the time to tell us if you're looking for a report on a fund and it's not available. It may help our cause if it's a fund for which we're still trying to get portfolio holdings. More importantly, if we can cover it, it'll help you with your investment decision-making.
