The winners of the 2011 Morningstar UK Fund Awards have now been announced--find out who won by clicking here.

The shortlist presents nominees in 15 award categories with each award designed to recognise those funds and fund groups that added the most value for investors within the context of a relevant peer group in 2010, and over the longer-term.

Suffice to say, our overwhelming objective for these awards is to deliver analysis that’s of immediate value to investors. We therefore used Morningstar’s quantitative methodology to screen for eligible nominees based on the one-, three-, and five-year performance history of all eligible funds. The Morningstar methodology also adjusts for risk using Morningstar Risk--a utility-theory-based screen that imposes a higher penalty for downside variation in a fund’s return than it does for upside volatility.

Also, because we want the Morningstar UK Fund Awards to be useful for everyday investors, we screened out non-retail-friendly funds, thereby removing all institutional share classes from the mix before subjecting those funds and fund groups that remained to a qualitative review by our analysts. We understand that investors often use awards as an early screen in their investment selections and the Morningstar quantitative awards methodology therefore takes care to exclude from nomination those funds that show some material cause for concern. This may be a fund that has posted a strong near-term return, but that has otherwise failed investors over the longer term; or a good fund currently under the uncertainty of a new manager; or more simply a fund that did not meet some of the fundamental criteria of a fund available to retail investors. Our analysts had no hesitation in removing a fund that fell short at this final hurdle and will talk more on this point when we announce the winners on March 3.
