Retail investors shun funds while institutions pile in

Net retail sales of unit trusts fell to £797.0m in May compared to £1,251.7m in the same month the previous year. Retail sales were also down from £1,947.2m in April 2001 but this is a normal seasonal trend with the rush for sales at the end of the tax year.

Institutional investors moved – as is often the case – in the opposite direction to the retail market. Net institutional sales were £803.9m in May 2001 against only £35.5m in May 2000.

Combining the two figures together the total net sales for the industry were up 24% to £1.6bn in May.

Among retail investors the most popular sectors in terms of net retail sales were UK All Companies (£328m), UK Other Bond (£145m) and Europe Excluding UK (£131m). The least popular sectors, with net outflows, were Japan (-£119m) and UK Smaller Companies (-£75m).

Net institutional sales once again differed markedly from the retail market. Japan was the third most popular with £71m while the Europe Excluding UK sector was the least popular with a net outflow of £61m.
