Holly Cook: On November 7th and 8th, Morningstar will be hosting its second ETF Invest Europe conference in Milan. Joining me to tell us a little bit more about this upcoming event is Jose Garcia Zarateof Morningstar’s European ETF Research team.
Jose, thanks for joinging me.
Jose Garcia Zarate: Thanks for inviting me.
Cook: Last year the ETF Invest conference was a great success but this year we’re going even bigger and better. What are you most excited about?
Garcia Zarate: Well, obviously we have representatives from all the ETF issuers in Europe, but the conference is about investing—it’s about giving the attendees ideas about where to put their money. And so we’ve got speakers that are going to provide interesting views about the macroeconomic environment, for example the first speaker will be the Chief European Economist of Barclays and he’s going to talk about predictions for 2014. We have a speaker from PIMCO as well talking about what’s going on in emerging markets, which is a hot topic at the moment. So that’s going to be very exciting.
Cook: So after we’ve sort of laid the land of the investing environment—and a great time for giving 2014 predictions as well—what are some of the more specific ETF topics that we might hear about?
Garcia Zarate: Yes, we won’t forget that apart from the idea of investing, we’re also there to provide education. And so we’ll focus on the more perhaps complex strategies that are coming up in the world of ETFs such as smart beta, and we’ll have a panel discussion with the key members of the smart beta world in ETFs, and we’re going to try to demystify the whole concept of smart beta.
Cook: So this isn’t just about investing ideas, it’s also making sure that all those attendees go away with a really firm foundation of knowledge about investing with these ETFs.
Garcia Zarate: It’s about investing idea, but it’s also about education because there’s a lot of work to do on the education stakes about ETFs in Europe. So hopefully it will be a good combination of both things, as it was last year, and really I think everybody should go!
Cook: And of course it’s not just ETF providers attending. The whole Morningstar European ETF Research team is going to be there…
Garcia Zarate: We’ll be there, moderating all the panel discussions and providing the independent view. We also are very happy that we’ve got our colleagues from the US coming over to help out and provide their views of what’s going on in the US market. So it’s going to be a quite interesting event.
Cook: Great, well I look forward to it and obviously being in Milan it’s an opportunity for a bit of sightseeing, good food and wine, so why not come?
Garcia Zarate: Absolutely! I mean, Milan, it’s great.
Cook: Well Jose, thanks very much for joining me. Looking forward to the event.
Garcia Zarate: Thank you.
Cook: For Morningstar, I’m Holly Cook, thanks for watching.
