Today is officially the first day of the 2010-2011 tax year and though Prime Minister Gordon Brown has rather hogged the limelight by announcing what most people had already deduced--that the General Election will be held on May 6--this day also amounts to a second chance at putting those New Year's financial resolutions in place. If, like me, you took January 1, 2010 as an opportunity to look back on the last few years of financial turmoil and concluded that 2011 should be the year that you really get your finances sorted out, reassess your investment goals and rebalance your portfolio, then well done. If, however, also like me, you then got rather distracted by a heavy workload, attempts to kick various habits, and a promise that you would spend more time in the gym, and 'forgot' to put your financial plan into action, then consider today to be the first day of 2010 (it is in tax terms, at least) and give yourself another chance at financial planning success.
In the lead up to the end of the 2009-2010 tax year, we at Morningstar.co.uk ramped up our efforts to provide you with a wealth of information on the benefits of Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) so for those that missed it--or are in need of a reminder--here is a summary of our ISA content over ISA Season. The deadline for maxing out your ISA allowance in 2009 may have expired but 2010 presents just as many opportunities to save and invest in a tax-efficient manner, and this year the allowance is £10,200.
