Researching Individual Stocks

If it's shares that get you excited then make sure you explore the middle column of our Equities Centre to find director dealings, news alerts, top performers, and many other useful metrics.

To research a specific stock, use the search box at the top of all Morningstar.co.uk pages to search by company name or ticker. Simply select your chosen stock from the dropdown list that appears and you'll be taken to that company's Stock Report.

Let's take a look at BP (BP.), for example: From BP's Stock Report you can access the oil major's share price performance chart, a synopsis of broker sentiment towards the stock, key ratios, and--for Premium subscribers--Morningstar's independent research report, including fair value estimate and financial health assessment.

Researching All Types of Funds

For those researching funds--whether it be OEICs, unit trusts, investment trusts or exchange-traded funds--use the search box in the same way to find data and news on individual securities.

We also have centres dedicated to each of these investment vehicles, where you'll find Quickrank and Screener tools that can help you find investments that meet your needs:

OEIC / Unit Trust tab

ETF tab

Investment Trust tab

Sortable Lists of Securities

No matter what type of investment you're looking for, our Quickrank tools help you quickly sort your chosen universe by specific criteria. For example, generate a list of all LSE-listed basic materials stocks and sort it by dividend yield. Or, generate a list of funds in the Morningstar Emerging Markets category and sort it by our analysts' forward-looking Gold, Silver, Bronze, Neutral and Negative ratings.

Links to each Quickrank tool can be found on that security type's relevant tab, i.e. Investment Trust Quickrank is on the Investment Trust tab. Alternatively, you'll find all our tools under the Tools tab.

Investments That Meet Your Specific Needs

Our Screener tools offer more flexibility when conducting your research by enabling you to identify specific investments that meet your identified needs. Here you can set your own criteria, such a maximum fund fee, minimum Morningstar Rating, specific category or sector, and best performance, and these tools will screen the investment universe to present you with only those securities that exactly meet your demands.

Links to each Screener tool can be found on that security type's relevant tab, i.e. Fund Screener is on the OEICs/Unit Trusts tab. Alternatively, you'll find all our tools under the Tools tab.

Managing and Monitoring Your Investments

We have three great tools to help you manage and monitor your investments.

Morningstar's Portfolio Manager is a free tool that enables you to create either watchlists (of securities you're considering buying, for example) or transaction portfolios (with the ability to buy and sell holdings, and set up automatic regular investments into your holdings).

Premium members gain access to two more essential investment tools. Portfolio X-Ray is a sophisticated analytical tool that digs down into your fund managers' holdings to provide an instant assessment of how your portfolio is diversified by region, sector and investment style, helping you uncover potential weaknesses.

Portfolio Monitor Report emails a monthly report direct to your inbox, providing an independent and holistic analysis of your investments, and delivering you both the latest X-Ray assessment of your portfolio and Morningstar analysts' independent opinion on your holdings.
